HONEYWELL FRICTION MATERIALS PRESENTS THREE CUTTING-EDGE BRAKE PAD TECHNOLOGIES AT FRANKFURT MOTOR SHOW

Advanced Original Equipment innovations include Hybrid Brake Pads, Copper-free Brake Pads and Brake Pad Technology for Aluminum Discs

Glinde, Germany, 13 September 2011 — Honeywell (NYSE:HON), a world leader in friction materials development, presented today, three technologies at the Internationale Automobil-Ausstellung (IAA) in Frankfurt, Germany.  The friction technologies developed by Honeywell are: Hybrid Brake Pads, Copper-free Brake Pads and Brake Pad Technology for Aluminum Discs. They possess new-generation friction materials technologies,  contributing to the advancement of the car manufacturing industry.

Honeywell’s new generation JURID® hybrid brake pads combine the high performance of low-metallic pads with the braking comfort of NAO (ceramic) pads. They are rapidly being adopted by many of the world’s leading car manufacturers. Additionally the hybrid brake pads have a competitive advantage of global compatibility, with features that meet requirements in all regions. Their formulation results in low-dust emission that contributes to less pollution and possess a European style pedal feel for confident braking. For instance, hybrid technology – like the JURID® Quality 200 - uses state of the art materials to ensure high comfort levels and long service life, delivering a no-squeal brake pad that sets new benchmarks in reducing dust pollution by up to 90%.

Significant strides have been made in removing copper from brake pads. Brake pads are known to contribute to copper pollution in water bodies, but Honeywell has developed  Copper-free Brake Pads, equipped with a new generation of Low-Met and NAO friction materials that meet new copper legislation in North America. With this recent development the customer is able to install brake pads that already exceed future legislative requirements, thereby avoiding the need to re-qualify new materials at a later point in the product life cycle of the vehicle. “With the new advanced technologies for brake pads, our customers benefit from increased comfort, improved vehicle efficiency and a success with meeting requirements for all regions. In addition, these technologies are in line with Honeywell’s efforts to support the greening of the car manufacturing sector and brake pads containing less than  5% Copper are already in series production.” says Dr. Rainer Bostel, President of Honeywell Friction Materials.

Honeywell Friction Materials will also showcase in Frankfurt, Germany, yet another of its avant-garde technologies with the Brake Pad for Aluminum Discs. It incorporates a new generation friction material that meets the unique requirements of aluminum discs and the standard of European car manufacturers. It includes advanced NAO friction material which forms an immediate protective film on the disc and allows the use of aluminum brake discs offering up to 50% disc weight reduction while meeting high performance European requirements. The reduced mass results in decreased fuel consumption and lower emission values combined with a lifetime disc and long-life pad package.

Honeywell puts a touch of friction into new car launches
Honeywell Friction Materials has made its mark as a leading friction materials supplier through the development of advanced technologies and high-performing yet high-comfort brake pads tailored towards its automotive customers around the world. Honeywell continues to launch its innovative brake pads on a wide range of vehicles that are making their debut for the first time at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show.

Over 10 premiere vehicles by six manufacturers from Europe and around the world are equipped with Honeywell brake pad technology. This remarkable lineup reflects strong OEM support for Honeywell’s technology, founded on its global manufacturing footprint, engineering support and the industry-leading capabilities of the Honeywell Technology Centre in Glinde.

The need for more powerful brakes is growing at a fast pace, whilst car manufacturers are also requiring that brake pads do not conflict with the vehicles overall weight which could negatively impact fuel efficiency. This dual-challenge increases the performance requirements of the brake pad.

The fundamental requirements are balanced according to desired characteristics and use of each individual vehicle – regardless of its shape and style, vehicles ranging from the Audi Q3 to all models of the Range Rover Evoque, are both fitted with Honeywell brake pad technologies.
