HONEYWELL FRICTION MATERIALS SHOWCASES NEW PRODUCT AND PACKAGING DESIGN FOR AFTERMAKET BRAKE PADS

Higher performing generation of friction material combined with premium brand packaging for the aftermarket

Paris, France, 11 October 2011 — Honeywell Friction Materials launched today its new product and packaging design for aftermarket brake pads at this year’s Equip Auto. “Take-off 2012” is Honeywell’s umbrella program for the launch of its improved range of Aftermarket brake pads, which continue to meet the same tough Honeywell quality standards with enhanced noise, vibration, harshness (NVH) and stability. The engineering team made this possible with the development of the new friction materials and the consistent addition of new anti-noise shims and chamfers across the range.

With this new generation of friction materials, Honeywell’s new brake pads reach even higher friction stability under all conditions of use, resulting in a driver-confident brake-feel and easier modulation and regulation of braking distances in all driving condition. Honeywell’s new brake pads also come in significantly improved packaging and are being delivered already to distributors and garages. These enhancements will progressively be introduced to the complete product range until the end of 2012.

Advantages of the new brake pads
Honeywell’s engineers have invested many years of experience to create these new brake pads that will be recognized as amongst the quietest available in the aftermarket. Radial and parallel chamfers and slots on the friction surfaces of the brake pads have been consistently incorporated, leading to optimal braking performance in every situation throughout the pad’s life, coupled with maximum noise reduction.

The slots also isolate the friction material in different parts, avoiding the occurrence of cracks on the pad surface, providing a better conformance to the system, and modifying the natural vibration frequency to avoid the resonance effect that leads to noise generation. All brake pads are equipped with a high-quality shim for noise-reduction. These anti-noise shim assemblies create an elastic damping layer between the friction surfaces (pads and discs) as well as the rest of the system, thus isolating the surfaces where the vibrations are generated. Anti-noise shims also increase the compressibility of the brake pad, to give a smoother pedal feeling.

“Our customers will find the friction level in the new Honeywell Brake Pads optimal under all operating conditions, with class-leading braking distances and outstanding low noise levels. With these additional enhancements for ‘Take off 2012’, Honeywell maintains its commitment to delivering 100% customer satisfaction”, says Dr. Bostel, President of Honeywell Friction Materials.

A brand new box for a brand new product
The new packaging design combines best in class stability and features of a reinforced box and shrink-wrapped pads for best product protection. The new box’s premium appearance enhances brand recognition through highest visual quality and smooth multi-colour exterior art work. The shrink-wrapping protects the brake pads against oxidation, contamination and mechanical damage. Additionally the shrink-wrapped pads do not rub against each other and thus look as if they have just left the factory. The new securely closing and wide-opening cap, allows the product to be easily and quickly removed by the technician. The label‘s layout has been redesigned to show the maximum of information needed for a precise identification of the product. The consistent corporate design of a trusted quality brand across all package sizes and references assures an easy recognition of Honeywell’s Bendix® and Jurid® products and protects the customer from purchasing counterfeits.

Honeywell expands its coverage to serve more new cars
As part of “Take-off 2012”, Honeywell plans to launch more than 150 references to cover more than 600 new applications by the end of 2011, and a car parc coverage increase of 5% on vehicles between zero and two years old. As a result, Honeywell will attain a record coverage of up to 99.6% for some manufacturers in Europe. This will allow independent garages to work on more new vehicles.
In addition, to simplify the daily work of garage operators, Honeywell has increased its product data in the industry’s key information systems by adding more than 90,000 cross-references to brake pads in the TecDoc database for Q3 2011. This is six times more than the number in April 2011.

Honeywell Friction Materials is one of the leading automotive suppliers of brake friction material in the world, and is a business unit of Honeywell Transportation Systems, which also consists of Turbo Technologies.
HONEYWELL FRICTION MATERIALS PRESENTS THREE CUTTING-EDGE BRAKE PAD TECHNOLOGIES AT FRANKFURT MOTOR SHOW

Advanced Original Equipment innovations include Hybrid Brake Pads, Copper-free Brake Pads and Brake Pad Technology for Aluminum Discs

Glinde, Germany, 13 September 2011 — Honeywell (NYSE:HON), a world leader in friction materials development, presented today, three technologies at the Internationale Automobil-Ausstellung (IAA) in Frankfurt, Germany. The friction technologies developed by Honeywell are: Hybrid Brake Pads, Copper-free Brake Pads and Brake Pad Technology for Aluminum Discs. They possess new-generation friction materials technologies, contributing to the advancement of the car manufacturing industry.

Honeywell’s new generation JURID® hybrid brake pads combine the high performance of low-metallic pads with the braking comfort of NAO (ceramic) pads. They are rapidly being adopted by many of the world’s leading car manufacturers. Additionally the hybrid brake pads have a competitive advantage of global compatibility, with features that meet requirements in all regions. Their formulation results in low-dust emission that contributes to less pollution and possess a European style pedal feel for confident braking. For instance, hybrid technology – like the JURID® Quality 200 - uses state of the art materials to ensure high comfort levels and long service life, delivering a no-squeal brake pad that sets new benchmarks in reducing dust pollution by up to 90%.

Significant strides have been made in removing copper from brake pads. Brake pads are known to contribute to copper pollution in water bodies, but Honeywell has developed Copper-free Brake Pads, equipped with a new generation of Low-Met and NAO friction materials that meet new copper legislation in North America. With this recent development the customer is able to install brake pads that already exceed future legislative requirements, thereby avoiding the need to re-qualify new materials at a later point in the product life cycle of the vehicle. “With the new advanced technologies for brake pads, our customers benefit from increased comfort, improved vehicle efficiency and a success with meeting requirements for all regions. In addition, these technologies are in line with Honeywell’s efforts to support the greening of the car manufacturing sector and brake pads containing less than 5% Copper are already in series production.” says Dr. Rainer Bostel, President of Honeywell Friction Materials.

Honeywell Friction Materials will also showcase in Frankfurt, Germany, yet another of its avant-garde technologies with the Brake Pad for Aluminum Discs. It incorporates a new generation friction material that meets the unique requirements of aluminum discs and the standard of European car manufacturers. It includes advanced NAO friction material which forms an immediate protective film on the disc and allows the use of aluminum brake discs offering up to 50% disc weight reduction while meeting high performance European requirements. The reduced mass results in decreased fuel consumption and lower emission values combined with a lifetime disc and long-life pad package.

Honeywell puts a touch of friction into new car launches
Honeywell Friction Materials has made its mark as a leading friction materials supplier through the development of advanced technologies and high-performing yet high-comfort brake pads tailored towards its automotive customers around the world. Honeywell continues to launch its innovative brake pads on a wide range of vehicles that are making their debut for the first time at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show.

Over 10 premiere vehicles by six manufacturers from Europe and around the world are equipped with Honeywell brake pad technology. This remarkable lineup reflects strong OEM support for Honeywell’s technology, founded on its global manufacturing footprint, engineering support and the industry-leading capabilities of the Honeywell Technology Centre in Glinde.

The need for more powerful brakes is growing at a fast pace, whilst car manufacturers are also requiring that brake pads do not conflict with the vehicles overall weight which could negatively impact fuel efficiency. This dual-challenge increases the performance requirements of the brake pad.

The fundamental requirements are balanced according to desired characteristics and use of each individual vehicle – regardless of its shape and style, vehicles ranging from the Audi Q3 to all models of the Range Rover Evoque, are both fitted with Honeywell brake pad technologies.

Honeywell Friction Materials is one of the leading automotive suppliers of brake friction material in the world, and is a business unit of Honeywell Transportation Systems, which also consists of Turbo Technologies and Consumer Products Group. As a leading automotive supplier, Honeywell Transportation Systems enhances vehicle performance, efficiency and appearance through state-of-the-art technologies, world-class brands, and global solutions tailored for its automotive customers around the world.

Honeywell International (
) is a Fortune 100 diversified technology and manufacturing leader, serving customers worldwide with aerospace products and services; control technologies for buildings, homes and industry; automotive products; turbochargers; and specialty materials.
HONEYWELL’S JURID PAD TECHNOLOGY, USED IN THE NEW MERCEDES-BENZ ACTROS, NOW AVAILABLE FOR SN7 BRAKES IN COMMERCIAL VEHICLES

JURID® OEM Quality Now Available for Aftermarket Applications

Glinde, Germany, 1 August 2011 – Honeywell (NYSE:HON), a world leader in friction materials development, today announced the launch of a new high-quality OE disc brake pad for commercial vehicles equipped with SN7 brakes. Honeywell is the only manufacturer of the pad with the patented Metlock® bonding system.

As from now, the original brake pad in JURID OE quality is not only available as OEM equipment for the new Mercedes-Benz Actros, but is also available as an aftermarket product for older Actros and other commercial vehicles with SN7 brakes. The new JURID 29 253 0 539 0 brake pad, which replaces the old JURID 29 108 1 539 0 pad, sets new benchmarks for safety and security. It is expected that old pads for SN7 brakes will be taken out of the market by the end of 2011.

Dr. Heribert Schumacher, vice president, Global Engineering at Honeywell Friction Materials, said, “The success of our brake pads is the result of a close collaboration between the vehicle and brake system manufacturers. This success strengthens every day our high reputation as a key OE supplier for heavy trucks. With this new pad, we are adapting all the OE knowledge and quality of our JURID products to the aftermarket so independent garages can offer best-in-class CV brake pads to their customers.”

Worry-free installation thanks to pad restraining system ProTec S®
Overall braking performance is boosted by the retaining system ProTec S® developed by Knorr Bremse. For the first time, this technology includes a welded hood that covers the spring, prevents it from being removed and binds it with the backing plate. This design eliminates the unsafe practice of reusing old springs with new brake pads. As a result, this newly patented technology makes the change of pads safer and quicker for all SN7 brakes.

Superior shearing resistance with the patented Metlock® bonding system
Honeywell is the only manufacturer in the world to use the Metlock® process, designed and patented by Honeywell, to address the specific performance demands of commercial vehicle braking applications. For the first time, Honeywell succeeded to use the Metlock® technology on a cast iron backing plate in this brake pad for SN7 applications. With Metlock®, a special coating, sinter-fused onto the backing plate, securely binds the friction material to the backing plate, even under extreme temperatures (up to 900ºC). This extremely high temperature stability and capability coupled with the fact that the contact area is now twice as large improves dramatically the performance of brake pads.

Peace of mind with data matrix code
The new pad for SN7 brakes comes with a tamperproof data code to ensure aftermarket customers get genuine JURID products. This code contains an encrypted data matrix that not only guarantees the original quality of the pad, it also traces the entire production process and protects garage operators from poor quality counterfeit products.

The new brake pad design is compatible with all existing pneumatic air disc brake applications. Up to date, the most important commercial vehicle applications for the OE quality JURID 29 253 0 539 0 brake pad are:

Manufacture

Model

OE No.

Jurid No.

Mercedes

Actros, Atego, Axor

0044206020

2925305390

MAN

TG-A

81508206030

DAF

CF / XF

1617343

IVECO

EuroCargo

2996378

SCANIA

Serie 4

1856108

SAF

SN7

03057007700

SCHMITZ

SN7

017251

Passion for trucks
Honeywell Friction Materials’ passion for commercial vehicles goes beyond its commitment to delivering best in class brakes pads for trucks. In fact, Honeywell is the sponsor of two award-winning truck racing teams at the FIA European Truck Racing Championship: the Buggyra and MKR Technology truck racing teams. On 10 July, the same technologies applied to the JURID pad for SN7 brakes have helped achieved double podium to both teams at the GP Nuerburgring.

Honeywell Friction Materials is one of the leading automotive suppliers of brake friction material in the world, and is a business unit of Honeywell Transportation Systems, which also consists of Turbo Technologies and Consumer Products Group.
Honeywell equips new Volkswagen Sharan and Seat Alhambra with Jurid brake pads thanks to its long-time experience as leading OE supplier

Glinde, Germany, February 27 2011 – Due to its long-time experience as a leading OE supplier Honeywell has once again been awarded the contract for the MPV platform of Volkswagen Group. This covers the Volkswagen Sharan as well as the identically constructed Seat Alhambra. Compared with its predecessor, the newly constructed vehicle offers a much sportier handling. Consequently Honeywell delivers an appropriate brake performance with its Jurid 310 friction material.

Basis for the Jurid 310 brake pad is a highly successful friction material composition, which was further developed and individually customized to numerous applications. Originally developed as an application for sporty passenger cars, the friction material was further enhanced a couple of years ago to meet the high requirements of the current Audi A4 brake system. The latest development stage is customized for the Volkswagen Sharan and Seat Alhambra and offers the driver a superior brake performance with a very precise pedal feeling. In accordance with EU law, the friction material is free of pollutive substances such as lead or cadmium. The Jurid 310 is manufactured at the Glinde production site near Hamburg.

On February 17, more than 1000 student teams will take the wheel of their Renault 4L from two race villages set up in Paris and Bordeaux for the 10-day event. We are committed to ensuring the success of this citizen partnership," said Stéphane Verschelde, Area Aftermarket Manager France & Benelux.

Giving Away $20,000 in Scholarships and an NHRA Weekend for Two

Troy, Mich., Oct. 1, 2010 — In an economy like this, who’s going to turn down free money...especially if those dollars will help build a well-paying career with a shortage of qualified workers?
This month and next, candidates interested in a career in automotive technology or repair will be able to vie for scholarships from the Bendix® team yet again in the brand’s second The Passion that Drives You® scholarship contest. And to add to the excitement, the Bendix team is including a chance to earn a Grand Prize trip for two to a National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) race in 2011.
“Nearly 500 applicants entered to win one of eight $2,500 scholarships in our first official The Passion That Drives You scholarship campaign,” said Jim Kelley, Director of Sales, North America for Friction Materials LLC. “We’re passionate about the automotive industry and want to foster that enthusiasm in future technicians. It can be challenging for students to fund their educations, so we’re pleased to offer $20,000 in scholarship monies again this year to help them pursue a career in this field.”
From Oct. 1 – Nov. 30, 2010, U.S. residents 18 years and older who are interested in pursuing a career in automotive technology can enter The Passion That Drives You scholarship contest from the Bendix Brakes team online at
. Entrants will be asked to complete an online form, upload a photo that showcases their passion for the industry and respond to an essay question regarding their passion for automobiles.
The Bendix team has developed a digital video to build awareness for the scholarship program and to drive applicants to
. William Knight, 28, one of last year’s winners will be featured in this year’s video as he attends NASCAR Tech in Mooresville, N.C. Knight, like many, is interested in pursuing a career in the motorsports tuning arena and the video speaks directly to those who want to take this path, though the contest is open to anyone entering automotive maintenance.
The video will be shared with tech schools, bloggers and enthusiast websites as well as through various social media networks. The video also will be housed on Bendix Brakes’ YouTube channel (
).
At the contest conclusion, a panel of qualified, independent judges will select the eight final entrants based on the highest scoring written entries.
One of the eight scholarship winners will also win a Grand Prize trip for two to an NHRA race in 2011. The judging for this will take place in two parts. Open voting on
will allow entrants’ friends and families to vote for them and they will be awarded extra points based on vote totals. In addition, judges will award points on the ability of the final entrants to demonstrate through their essay response on why they are passionate about entering the field of automotive technology. Public voting will begin on October 1, 2010 and run through December 15, 2010. The winners will be announced in January 2011. The contest’s full rules and regulations can be found at
.
